Maria Montessori was an educator far ahead of her time. As female medical doctor, her career options were limited. Over years of observing the children she noticed how they manipulated simple objects, over and over again and with repeated joy. Based on these observations, she created simple materials–manipulatives, really–to use in the pre-school she founded. Her original designs have stood the test of time, as have the Montessori Method–her tried and true way of introducing the materials to children. Over 100 years later, modern psychology has shown the Montessori Method to be spot on.
