Maria Montessori referred to the learning materials as “works,” in reference to the activity involved and how movement and learning are interconnected. Last week many Austinites rejoiced that “school’s out” but here at Highland Montessori we are still loving our works! No summer camps for our hard-working students… at least until the end of the […]

Surviving Storms
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this weekend’s storms. Aside from a very muddy playground, the weekend storms spared HMS. We are grateful to be on the high side of the ditch that runs beside school. Our only casualty was a young sycamore tree that was bent after Saturday and broken after Monday… In the […]
Learning about Conch Shells
This morning, one of our student’s mom came to visit and she brought some conch shells that they have collected. We learned that the shells are home to a snail that is an herbivore. When living in the ocean, they may be eaten by blue crabs, rays and some kinds of sharks. People can eat the […]
Springtime Strings
Last week, one of our students was leaving us, but first she wanted to give a concert with and for her friends. This was the lovely result. Highland Montessori School String Concert from Highland Montessori School on Vimeo. Special thanks to Mrs Laura for making this happen!
Investigating Nature
Throughout the fall, winter and spring, our students watched the plants grow on the playground–from little seedlings to leafy flowering stalks and finally seedpods! This week, we’ve brought some inside to investigate and learn science vocabulary.
Amazon Smiles & HMS
In addition to our already-existing Associates program, and other ways to support Highland Montessori, we are now registered with Amazon Smiles. This program allows you to choose a charity of your choice to receive 0.5% of your Amazon purchase price, at no extra cost to you. We hope you’ll choose HMS.
The Large Mammals are Back
Yesterday, the large mammals emerged from their winter in the shed. The animals and students all had a lot of fun!
Music Takes the Stage
Not that we needed further proof, but these videos make it clear that we love Mrs Laura and her effect on our children. We were treated this spontaneous compilation on the playground two weeks ago. (“I like, I like, I like, the Earth, the Earth! Louder!”) I_Like_the_Earth from Highland Montessori School on Vimeo. And this week, a different group of students […]
Chinese New Year
Some old friends came to visit us on Friday to teach us about Chinese New Year. We welcomed in the new year with a lion dance and eating oranges. In a couple of years we are looking forward to all of the calm, creative, thoughtful and perservering children who are born this year, the Year of the […]
Happy Valentine’s Day
At HMS, we are celebrating love by sharing these student-made Valentines. Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone!
January Ink Art
This month, our students have been busy creating artwork using black ink drawings as a base. Check out this video to see some of the results. January Ink Art from Highland Montessori School on Vimeo. Enjoy!
Even when it’s cold outside
At HMS, we are dedicated to the physical development of the child. Yes, we are a school and we want our little scholars read, write, add, subtract and get along with others. Academic, emotional and physical growth are all interwoven. And so, we go out for playtime and run and scream and jump. Everyday. Even when […]
