A kind, gentle North Austin community school
Many thanks to one of our wonderful parents for sharing a story with our students this morning, and helping with a craft to illustrate it. First, we read about how Peter woke up on a snowy day and went outside to play. Then, each student made a 3D illustration based on the Peter’s fun day.
Getting ready for our Day of the Dead discussion/celebration, this morning we decorated our calaveras…. full-body style.
Last week, we installed a “Painting Glass” on the playground. This lets our young students be creative in a fun environment. They are able to use large brushes and, when done, wet the glass and squeegee off the paint–a lesson on the temporary nature of life’s moments.
Today in Art, several of our older students began making a map of their very own island! First, the young artists heard a story for inspiration… Then they discussed some ideas for their own island… And then they designed their own islands. Respecting your environment is a basic tenet of Montessori teaching. But who knew cleaning things could be so fun, especially when you do it with friends?
Our students have been learning about mandalas, and set out making some of their own using pastels, watercolor and some other media. Yes, mandalas are more than the sand that we see on display! Play the video to see some of the results.
Our art teacher, Dorte, is on Day #3 of working with the kids to make stepping stones to put on our playground. This is a beautiful example of the kids learning about process and order through their work at school.
