Handwashing Experiment

Parents and teachers often remind children to “wash your hands.” It is not a stretch to imagine the child who wonders “Why do I wash my hands? They look the same before and after!”  Last month, one child’s parent, a high school Biology teacher, offered to help our classroom do an experiment that would show the children the before and after.

Everyone gathered around in a circle and was given a sterile dish. One-by-one they touched one side of it, then left to wash their hands, and then touched the second side. Each container was taped shut, and left for 48 hours.

On that second day, everyone got a chance to look at how much their germs grew. The results were truly disgusting, and a great reminder of why we wash our hands well and often!

Can you tell which side was touched by dirty hands?
