HMS Founding Teacher
Born in Mexico City, Sofia grew up mostly in Texas. She earned a B.A. in Psychology at UT and spent time in the field of psychology working with children ages six to twelve in a small clinic in Cuernavaca, Mexico, focusing mostly on play and occupational therapy. Sofia then moved to New York and began working at the Washington Market School as Site Coordinator where her interest in child development and Montessori principles began to grow.
As a Montessori child, Sofia still remembers how happy and calm it felt when it was time to go to school everyday. She recalls the peace that she experienced in the thoughtfully prepared environment. Toward the end of her time in NYC, Sofia knew that her place was back in that classroom, so she moved to Austin and began work as a teacher, with the goal of opening a school soon. She can safely say that her life has not been the same since! She is very grateful and delighted to work with Khuloud, Dörte, Carla, Catherine and the wonderful families that constitute the Highland Montessori School community.
Outside of school, Sofia spends a lot of time dancing, cooking, reading and taking care of her pets. She enjoys art, cinema, music and all things related to culture, language, nature and education.
